Although Akkayya was very interested in studies, Nannagaru did not educate him. He believed that studies would not come to a girl's mind. Therefore, he had to discontinue his education to Akkayya. He focused only on the education of Ananya. Akkayya was married to a villager and was confined to doing her household chores. Ammalu took her Akkayya around the house. Akkayya was astonished to see trumpet and pomegranate trees in flower pots among the flowering plants. He felt sorry for them. He questioned Ammalu how they would grow in that small space and why they could not let them grow freely. Ammalu explained that they were bonsai trees. He told that Bonsai is a special way of growing plants. The Japanese named this method bonsai. But Akkayya did not like the idea. Ammalu was distressed as she was unable to impress her Akkayya with her bonsai. Then came the storm that brought all the sand from the desert. Ammalu grabbed Akkayya's shoulder and dragged him into the room. After sometime it started raining. Ammalu immediately pulled the pots and flower pots of the bonsai tree under the umbrella. Akkayya opened the window and looked at the streets. He saw many people standing under a huge turai tree. He showed Ammalu saying that it is providing shelter to the people and giving them strength. Ammalu asked Akkayya what was surprising in this. Akkayya then explained to Ammalu that the life of a housewife is like a bonsai. Although the bonsai looked appropriate and lovely, it was too fragile. It could not provide protection to anyone. In fact, it had to be brought under the umbrella so that it could not be destroyed. Akkayya's words touched Ammalu's heart. He felt that the bonsai trees had been freed from their flower pots. Thus the story is a plea to provide education to empower women and make them financially independent.
