The author, after fourteen and a half months in the Dehradun jail, realizes that he is fully acquainted with every aspect of it. He has almost become a part of it. He does not feel that he is alone in his cell because there are many creatures living there.
He had better cells in other prisons. But he had a privilege in Dehradun which was very precious to him. The cell was too small. He could not move in it. So he was allowed to hang out in the morning and evening. That added privilege was enough for his contact with nature. He could see mountains, fields and public roads.
Only a prisoner imprisoned for a long time behind high walls can understand the psychological value of outdoor walks. It was so valuable that the author did not stop his morning and evening walks even in the rainy season. For months when he was all alone in his cell and did not interview, he looked at the mountains and enjoyed.
The spring was very pleasant in Dehradun but the winter cut down almost all the trees in their leaves. But mysteriously the situation changed and green leaves appeared on them. It was a gay and cheering scene. The sudden change from bud to leaf was truly amazing.
Monsoon rains were always welcome as they put an end to the summer heat. Dehradun has always favored the rain-god.
Winter was also pleasant, except when it rained. Heavy rains, hailstorms and hailstorms sometimes cause trouble. But, after all, there was a comfortable accommodation.
By refraining from engaging in normal activities, they (the author and his co-prisoners) became more attentive to the way of nature. He saw various animals and insects coming his way. As the author became more observant, he started seeing all sorts of these insects. He never interfered with the insects as they were living their life without interfering with him. It was another matter that there was a constant war between the author and the bedbugs and the mosquitoes to some extent between the flies. There was an understanding between the author and the other beings.
The author did not like bats but had to endure them. He used to fly fearlessly in the evening. Sometimes it looked like they were attacking. The authors called him 'the flying fox'.
He stared at ants, white ants and other insects for hours. He also saw the comical fashion of lizards. They found it interesting to chase prey and chase each other.
The squirrels were also the companions of the writer there. The writer enjoyed his movements. Sometimes they would get on his knee. He found pigeons like Dunn in almost all the prisons. Here their number was in the thousands. Sometimes the jail officials would shoot them and feed them. There were also 'Manus' in Doon Jail. A couple of them nested at his cell-door. The author used to feed them. He eagerly demanded that if there was any delay in his morning or evening meal.
There were thousands of parrots in Naini jail. Their courtship and courtship was always a fascinating sight. Encephalitis Birds and Monkeys were also co-residents of the author in prison. The reckless courage of the monkeys sometimes terrified the crowd. Scorpions were often found in the cell. But no one ever scolded the author. Three or four snakes were also found in or near his cell. The author did not appreciate or welcome snakes, but he was never afraid of them. He felt repulsion only from centipedes.
He saw a new animal in Dehradun jail. The owner of the animal named 'Bo'. Later they came to know that it is 'Pangolin'.
To satisfy their emotional hunger, the prisoners were keeping animals as pets but ordinary prisoners could not keep them. The most common domesticated animals were squirrels and mongooses. Dogs were not allowed in prisons but the author liked dogs very much and kept some dogs and fed them.
Different countries have adopted different animals as symbols of their ambition or character. These guardian animals mold the national character. It is surprising that Hindus are gentle and non-violent to their patron animal cow.
