Mridu goes to Rukku Manni's house. Mridu is a young girl who lives in Chennai with her grandmother Tapi and grandfather Thatha. One afternoon Mridu along with Tapi goes to her aunt Rukku Manni's house. There he meets his cousins Lalli, Ravi and Meena. Everyone in Rukku Manni's house was happy seeing Mridu. There was a thick bitter bush in their backyard and Ravi took it with him. Inside a torn football was a small kitten that was sacked. The little creature was busy drinking milk kept inside a half-shell of a coconut.

Meena tells Mridu that they found the kitten outside their house early that day. But, they must keep it a secret otherwise Grandma will leave her house immediately. Ravi was upset that he was being taught to be kind to animals, but when he tried to do so, the elders were shouting at the kitten as a dirty creature. Her grandmother got suspicious while taking out milk for the kitten from the kitchen. She had to drink more than half the milk to convince him that it was for her.

He also tells Mridu that they have named the kitten as Mahendran. Mridu liked this name because it sounded surreal, unlike those cute ones you usually have for kittens. Ravi further said that its full name was Mahendravarma Pallava Poonai or M.P. Poonai for short. He informed her that he could make it out of her fur that it was a fine breed of cat, a close relative of the lion family, as used by the Pallava kings in their emblems. Mridu laughs at this which prompts Ravi to prove his knowledge of history further.

On his school trip to Mahabalipuram, he saw a statue of a lion and firmly believed that it was the ancestor of that kitten. He proudly announces that his little kitten is a descendant of Mahabalipuram Rishi-Cat. He reminded Mridu of the worship of cats in ancient Egypt. They believed that it was a descendant of the cat goddess, Basset. He heard a scream and later realized that Lalli was learning to play the violin.

The elderly music guru was adept at playing the violin, but Lalli could not concentrate on learning it. Then he heard a beggar shouting from the gate. Hearing this, Ravi's mother calls Ravi from the kitchen to ask the beggar to leave as he used to come every day to ask for alms. After the order to leave, he was ready to leave, but he requested permission to rest under that tree as it was scorching heat and the coal tar had melted on the road. He showed his blistered feet to the children and requested them to be allowed back.

Taking pity on them, the children decided to give them a pair of slippers, but their slippers were too small to fit their feet. So he started looking for a suitable one. He found a pair of music gurus lying on the porch. He picked them up and gave them to the beggar and the beggar went away. Now, after the teaching session is over, the music guru starts searching for his missing chappals. Lalli and Rukku Manni also joined the search. Then Ravi announces that he has given it to the beggar.

His mother got angry with Ravi. Then he found Gopu Mama's new slippers barely worn and gave the pair to the music-master. The music-gurus were overjoyed to have found that new pair. The music-master then teased Ravi's mischievousness and referred to him as a monkey - albeit in a higher term as Hanuman - and prayed that only a Rama could save him. The comparison did not sit well with Rukku Manni and her disapproval led to the music master being quickly kicked out. In the end, the question was smoldering for Ravi, "What is Gopu Mama going to say tonight when I tell him that I have given my chappals to the music-master?"

मृदु रुक्कू मन्नी के घर जाती है। मृदु एक युवा लड़की है जो चेन्नई में अपनी दादी तापी और दादा थाथा के साथ रहती है। एक दोपहर मृदु तापी के साथ अपनी मौसी रुक्कू मन्नी के घर जाती है। वहां उसकी मुलाकात अपने चचेरे भाई लल्ली, रवि और मीना से होती है। मृदु को देखकर रुक्कू मन्नी के घर में सभी खुश थे। उनके पिछवाड़े में एक घनी कड़वी झाड़ी थी और रवि उसे अपने साथ ले गया। एक फटे हुए फुटबॉल के अंदर एक छोटा सा बिल्ली का बच्चा था जो बर्खास्त कर दिया गया था। नन्हा जीव एक नारियल के आधे खोल के अंदर रखे दूध को पीने में व्यस्त था।

मीना ने मृदु को बताया कि उन्हें उस दिन की सुबह अपने घर के बाहर बिल्ली का बच्चा मिला है। लेकिन, उन्हें इसे गुप्त रखना चाहिए अन्यथा दादी तुरंत अपना घर छोड़ देंगी। रवि परेशान था कि उन्हें जानवरों के प्रति दयालु होना सिखाया जा रहा है, लेकिन जब वह ऐसा करने की कोशिश कर रहा था तो बड़े लोग बिल्ली के बच्चे को गंदा प्राणी कहकर चिल्ला रहे थे। रसोई से बिल्ली के बच्चे के लिए दूध निकालते समय उसकी दादी को शक हुआ। उसे यह विश्वास दिलाने के लिए कि यह उसके लिए है, उसे आधे से अधिक दूध पीना पड़ा।
