The doctor says that the temperature is 102 degrees and also prescribes three types of medicines and said that if they avoid pneumonia and the fever does not go above 104 degrees then the boy will be fine.

When a father gives Schatz his medicine, Schatz asks if he thinks the medicine will help and the father responds in the affirmative. After an attempt to interest Schatz in the pirate book and the father stops reading. Schatz then asks his father when the father thinks Schatz will die. This tells the father that Schatz had heard at school in France that no one can live with a temperature above 44, so Schatz thinks that with a temperature of 102 his death is certain. He's been waiting to die all day.

After his father explains the difference between Fahrenheit and Celsius, Schatz relaxes, lets go of his iron self-control, and the next day he allows himself to be upset over small things.
