कहानी की शुरुआत एक गर्मी के दिन से होती है जिसमें तीन बच्चे और उनकी चाची टेंपलकॉम्ब के रास्ते में एक ट्रेन की कार में बैठे होते हैं। उनके साथ कार में एक अजनबी भी होता है जो उनके व्यवहार पर ध्यान देता है। बच्चे ऊब जाते हैं और अपने चाचा से तरह-तरह के सवाल पूछते हैं। वह उन्हें आसपास का निरीक्षण करने के लिए कहती है, लेकिन यह केवल उनकी जिज्ञासा को बढ़ाता है। चाची ने बच्चों को कुछ देर चुप रहने के लिए एक कहानी सुनाने का फैसला किया। वह एक पारंपरिक, नैतिक कहानी लेकर आती है जो बच्चों की रुचि को पकड़ने में विफल रहती है और इससे भी अधिक असंतोष पैदा करती है। कहानी सुनते ही एक अनजान व्यक्ति ने उसमें खामियां बताने का फैसला किया। चाची ने अपराध कबूल कर लिया और उसे एक अच्छी कहानी बताने की चुनौती दी।
