Here's an introduction to Shylock, one of the most complex characters in English literature. This scene completes the exposition that begins with the Bond story when Antonio agrees to Shylock's demand for a pound of meat.

Bassanio meets Shylock and asks for a loan of three thousand ducats on Antonio's credit. Shylock believes that since Antonio's wealth is at the mercy of the sea, he is a 'good man' and can earn some money if luck so desires. When Bassanio invites him to dine with Antonio, Shylock refuses because it is his principle not to dine with Christians.

Antonio appears and Shylock is filled with disgust upon seeing the merchant. Antonio has always criticized him for charging interest on the money lent.
