कवि अपने बचपन के दिन के बारे में बताता है। वह एक चूड़ी विक्रेता, माली और चौकीदार द्वारा प्राप्त स्वतंत्रता से आकर्षित था। वह ईर्ष्यालु था, क्योंकि उसे वह स्वतंत्रता नहीं मिल सकती थी।
वह उस पर थोपी गई दिनचर्या और समय-सारणी से मुक्त होना चाहता था। वह धूप में भीगना चाहता था और बारिश में भीगना चाहता था। वह अपनी परछाई से खेलना चाहता था।
दस बजने पर कवि गोंग की आवाज पर स्कूल के लिए निकलता है। बच्चा रोज अपनी गली से गुजरता है और एक फेरीवाले के पास आ जाता है। फेरीवाला चूड़ी बेचता है। ऐसा लगता है कि उसे कोई जल्दी नहीं है क्योंकि उसे कवि के बिल्कुल विपरीत कहीं भी पहुंचने की जरूरत नहीं है।
बयानों का अर्थ है कि बच्चे को विभिन्न कार्यक्रम और समय का पालन करना पड़ता है। वह चूड़ी विक्रेता द्वारा प्राप्त स्वतंत्रता का आनंद लेना चाहता था।
वह अपने जीवन की तुलना एक माली से भी करता है जो एक घर में काम करता है। जब वह चार बजे स्कूल से लौटता है, तो वह माली के जीवन से ईर्ष्या करता है और चाहता है कि वह माली हो।
कवि उसे औजारों से खेलने का आनंद लेते हुए पाता है, कोई भी उसे धूप सेंकने से नहीं रोकता है। उसके कपड़े धूल से भीग जाते हैं, उसे भी बारिश का मजा आता है। जबकि कवि से सवाल किया जाता है और अक्सर निर्देशित किया जाता है।
लड़का एक चौकीदार के जीवन और दिनचर्या के बारे में बात करता है। चौकीदार रात में अपनी स्वतंत्रता का आनंद लेता है लेकिन कवि की माँ उसे देर शाम को सुलाती है।
चौकीदार पूरी आजादी का आनंद लेते हुए सड़कों पर घूमता है। वह लालटेन घुमाता है और घूमता है। कवि एक चौकीदार का जीवन व्यतीत करना चाहता है। कवि स्वतंत्रता चाहता है।
