वह अपने निर्विवाद ज्ञान के लिए दूर-दूर तक प्रसिद्ध हैं। उसे अनुचित सम्मान दिया जाता है और न केवल उसके पड़ोस में बल्कि दूर के शहर में भी सम्मान का आदेश दिया जाता है जहां ग्रामीण भविष्यवक्ता बहुत मनोरंजन का विषय होते हैं।

एक दिन उसके छोटे से घर में कुछ युवा आते हैं। उनमें से एक उससे कहता है- कि उसके हाथ में एक चिड़िया है। वह उससे पूछता है कि वह जीवित है या मृत। बूढ़ी औरत, अंधी होने के कारण अपने आगंतुकों और उनमें से एक के हाथों में पक्षी को नहीं देख सकती है। वे उसकी चुप्पी पर हंसते हैं। युवक ने अपना प्रश्न दोहराया। फिर वह नरम लेकिन दृढ़ स्वर में बोलती है कि वह नहीं जानती कि पक्षी मर गया है या जीवित है, क्योंकि वह अंधी है। इस जवाब पर उन्हें डांट लगाई जा रही है।

जब छोटे बच्चे बोलना समाप्त कर देते हैं और उस जगह पर सन्नाटा छा जाता है, तो बूढ़ी अंधी महिला कहने लगती है कि अब उसे उन पर भरोसा है। उसे इस बात का भी भरोसा है कि जिस चिड़िया को उन्होंने सच में पकड़ा है वह फिलहाल उनके हाथ में नहीं है। वह उनके सौहार्दपूर्ण व्यवहार और उनके साथ बातचीत के लिए भी उनका धन्यवाद करती हैं।

Once upon a time there is a story of an old woman. She is an intelligent blind lady. She is the daughter of a black, enslaved American. There may be a guru next to him who will be gently pacifying the quiet children with his thoughtful teachings.

The author feels that he has heard such stories in the writings of many cultures. One such version describes a woman. She is a black American who lives alone in a small house outside the city.

He is known far and wide for his undeniable knowledge. He is given undue respect and commanded respect not only in his neighborhood but also in a distant city where rural prophets are the subject of much entertainment.

One day some young people come to his small house. One of them tells him that he has a bird in his hand. He asks her whether he is alive or dead. The old woman, being blind, cannot see the bird in the hands of her visitors and one of them. They laugh at his silence. The young man repeated his question. Then she speaks in a soft but firm voice that she does not know whether the bird is dead or alive, because it is blind. He is being scolded for this answer.

The author derives the underlying meaning from this statement. He guesses that the bird in hand is a weak creature. So he chose to read bird as a language and woman as a practicing writer.

The author is curious to know about those young children. He is shocked at their unexpected and sudden visit to the old woman's house. He thinks that his visit may be a hoax or a ploy to show his power, his obnoxious speech may also lead to obstructing and breaking the law of elderly persons.

Young people keep asking many questions to the blind old lady. According to her because of her blindness, she can express her thoughts without looking at pictures or outside scenes. To know about the man, they wanted to know from him about a woman who has no home in this world.

When the little children have finished speaking and there is silence in the place, the old blind woman begins to say that she trusts them now. He is also sure that the bird he has actually caught is not in his hands at the moment. She also thanks him for his cordial behavior and conversation with him.

Thus, Nobel laureate Toni Morrison has shed a surprising amount of light on the proper use of language. It is the language that is the vehicle of great changes and great revolutions in its surroundings and in the dying world. But the language should be alive and full of energy. She beautifully detailed the plight of women and downtrodden classes through the story 'Once Upon a Time'.
