കണ്ണുകള്‍ നഷ്ട മായ കഥാപാത്രത്തിന്‌ 'കണ്ണമ്മ'
എന്ന പേര്‌ മനപൂര്‍വ്വം തന്നെ നല്‍കി

യതായിരിക്കാം. കണ്ണുകൾക്ക്‌ മാത്രമേ കാഴ്ച
നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നുള്ളൂ. മനസ്സ്‌ കണ്ണുകളേക്കാള്‍ ;
തെളിഞ്ഞതായിരുന്നു. ഉൾക്കാഴ്ച അവള്‍ക്ക്‌ ;

കിലുക്കം അവളുടെ ജീവിതത്തില്‍ നല്‍കിയ
ആഹ്ലാദം വിവരിക്കാ വുന്നതല്ല. അത്രയും
കാലത്തെ ജീവിതത്തിനിടയില്‍ അവള്‍ ഏറ്റവും
കൂടുതല്‍ സന്തോഷിച്ച നിമിഷമാണ്ത്‌. ജീവിതം
വലിയ കാര്യങ്ങളിലല്ല ചെറിയ ചെറിയ ;
കാര്യങ്ങളിലാണ്‌ സംതൃപ്തി തരുന്നത്‌ എന്ന്‌ കാഴ്ച ]
നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടവരുടെ ഈ ലോകത്തിനെ കണ്ണമ്മ
ഓര്‍മ്മപ്പെടുത്തുന്നു.

ജീവിക്കുകയും സന്തോഷിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യു
ന്നവരാണ്‌. നിറങ്ങളുടേയും ശബ്ദങ്ങളുടേയും
വര്‍ണിപ്രപഞ്ചം അവര്‍ക്കിഷുമാണ്‌.
അത്തരത്തിലുള്ള ലോകം നിഷ്ധേക്കപ്പെട്ട ]
കുട്ടിയാണ്‌ ഈ കഥയിലെ കണ്ണമ്മ. ശബ്ദങ്ങളുടെ
ലോകത്തില്‍ മാത്രം ജീവിക്കുന്നു ;
കണ്ണമ്മയെങ്കിലും അവള്‍ക്ക്‌ ആഹ്ലാദിക്കാനുള്ള |
ശബ്ദങ്ങള്‍ അനാഥാലയത്തില്‍ അന്യമായിരുന്നു.
