India has always been a part of the background of my life, but I have never seen it until now, as a whole and for myself. Yet the stories our Indian family doctor and his wife told me as a child were ingrained in my growing dreams, and I had long read everything I could get from my father about that country. What I had learned through Buddhism and the life history of Lord Buddha.

When did I go to India to see the Taj Mahal, though I did not see it by moonlight, not Fatehpur Sikri, though I saw it, and not the glory of the Empire in New Delhi, though I saw them. I want to see India, see and hear two groups of people, young intellectuals in cities and farmers in villages. There I met in a small room in the city, in small houses in the villages, and I heard their plans for independence. Already intellectuals believed that another world war was inevitable. He was deeply disappointed by what he felt was England's broken promises after World War I.

He declared that the British had no real objective of restoring India to the people. I could believe this anew because I was from China. Where the period of patronage of the people seemed endless and self-government progressed every year. 'When you are ready for freedom, the victors have always said to their subjects etc! But who is going to decide when that moment will come and how can people learn to rule themselves other than do it?

So the intellectuals in India were restless and bitter, and I sat for hours watching their burning black eyes.
