In the Birch poem, Frost paints images of a child growing into adulthood through the symbolism of aging birch trees. Through these images, readers can see the reality of the real world as compared to their carefree childhood.
The speaker says that when he sees the leaning birch trees in the forest, he thinks that a boy must be swinging on the branches which would have bent the trees. But the speaker knows that birch trees do not bend by swinging. Then he learns that the snow storm has actually twisted the trees. The weight of the snow bends the birch. The poet likes the idea that the boy swings on a swing, climbs from side to side on the trees. The speaker used to swing on birches and wishes he could go back to those days. He wants to be a boy again and swings on the birch and swings on the branches.
The tone of this composition is conversational. Frost employs the first person and addresses 'you', as in normal conversation, and includes gossip phrases such as 'you would think', 'but I was going to say', etc. This is a monologue and phrase with his choice. Frost brings it up as an improvised monologue. He considers the semi-hidden development and disclosure of his subject to be something that is self-evident and doesn't need to be explained, forcing the listener/reader to mentally keep up with him.
'Birch' is divided into three distinct classes. The first section describes the reality, the effect of the forces of nature on the birch. In the second section, the poet talks about an ideal world, the world as he wishes. In the third section of the poem, Frost describes all of his 'ideas' and how he will enjoy being Birch's swinger again (as he once has been).
The poem swings back and forth between two visual perspectives: the boys' playful swings and the birch trees swayed by snow storms, the thematic intertwining somewhat perplexing.
