At that time an animal dealer asked if he wanted a baby gorilla. He was asking for twelve hundred pounds. It was beyond his means but he decided to generate money from the rich people. With great difficulty he achieved the impossible and brought the gorilla to his place. The animal was beautiful and healthy and friendly too. The cage was not ready so the animal had to be kept inside his guest room. Durrell's wife and mother immediately took a liking to the baby gorilla, N'Pongo. Finally, when he left the room, he was in a dilapidated state, dangling raspberry juice on the wall, straw in every nook and corner, and oddly enough door handles.
Although N'Pongo sometimes behaved with dignity. With his good manners and sense of humour, this beautiful animal became a favorite of the zoo. Although he had many fans; He joked with the audience. Soon it was time for the animal to have a mate, so a female gorilla named Nandi was brought to the zoo. Nandi's eyes were big and bright but there was fear in her eyes.
