When the Trees Walked Chapter Summary in English

Section I

The story begins with the narrator and his grandfather sitting on the porch stairs, then the narrator notices a stalk (climbing plant) crawling towards the grandfather. Twenty minutes later, the trunk crosses the stairs and touches Grandpa's feet.

The narrator believes that there is a scientific explanation for the behavior of the plant. The garden became a happy place whenever the grandfather joined the storyteller in the garden. Grandfather worked in the Indian Forest Service for many years, so he loved trees and plants. After he retired, he built a bungalow on the outskirts of Dehradun. He planted trees like lime, mango, orange and guava around the house. As Doon Valley was fertile all the trees grew taller and stronger.

An old People tree broke the walls of an abandoned outhouse. People trees have broad-breasted trunks and slender hip leaves that rotate like apex, attracting our attention and inviting us into their shade. Grandma People wanted to cut down the tree, but Grandpa decided not to because he thought he could build another outpost.

Grandma is not against trees, she is passionate about growing flowers. She ordered the seeds and her grandfather helped her with the gardening. Grandpa helped her not because he liked gardening, but because he liked to see butterflies drawn towards the flowers.

Section II

Balanced Education 6th English Solutions Period 1 Prose Chapter 2 When Trees Happened2

Grandpa would walk into the woods on the river bank, planting saplings and cuttings, during the rains. The narrator questioned the grandfather that no one would come there. Grandpa replied that he was planting them for more food and shelter for the forest and for the animals and birds. He explained that trees are needed for fruits and flowers to keep the desert away, to attract rain, to prevent rivers from being swept away.

When George Morris taught poetry to his grandfather, the narrator eagerly assisted his grandfather. Grandpa said the trees would start to walk again like before until some of the servants (pranks) recited the mantra.

The narrator and grandfather saw an island that was dry in the summer, but flooded during the rains. Grandpa saw a small mangrove growing there and decided to plant tamarind, laurel and coral saplings on the island.

Section III

Balanced Education 6th English Solutions Period 1 Prose Chapter 2 When Trees Happened3

The narrator, who spent the rainy season with his grandparents, saw the rain-soaked life and greenery there. He also saw vines with broad leaves, peacock trees rooted in the roof, and mangoes sprouting from the window sill. During World War II, the narrator moved to Delhi with his father. He went to England two or three years later and returned to India many years later. When he returned to Dehradun many years later, he walked towards the river bank. They were amazed at the spectacular (amazing) view of the island where they planted coral saplings. He could hear the squirrel and the goose asking him who they were. The narrator could see the trees recognizing him and coming closer. He remembered what Grandpa had said, 'The trees are happening again.'
