‘विहिरीतील पाणी’ ही कथा कासिम आणि अहमद या दोन प्रमुख पात्रांभोवती फिरते. कासिम हा शेतकरी होता आणि त्याचा अहमदच्या विहिरीवर डोळा होता आणि त्यामुळे त्याला त्याच्या शेतात पाणी वाहण्यास मदत होणार होती. प्रत्येक वेळी कासीम अहमदच्या विहिरीत जाण्यासाठी विनवणी करायचा, त्याची विनंती अहमदने फेटाळली. शेवटी एके दिवशी अहमदने कासीमला सुचवले की तो त्याच्याकडून विहीर विकत घेऊ शकतो. कासीमला ही कल्पना आवडली, जी त्याला फायदेशीर वाटली, त्याने आपल्या सर्व बचतीतून विहीर विकत घेतली.

दुसऱ्या दिवशी कासीम स्वतःच्या विहिरीवर गेला (किंवा त्याला वाटले) आणि पाणी काढण्यासाठी एक जलवाहिनी काढली. अहमदने त्याला प्रश्न केला की त्याच्या उपस्थितीत पाण्याला स्पर्श करण्याची त्याची हिंमत कशी झाली आणि पुढे त्याने पुढे सांगितले की त्याने फक्त विहीर त्याला विकली होती आणि विहिरीतील पाणी अद्याप त्याच्या मालकीचे नाही. त्याने एक सूचना देखील पुढे केली की कासीम त्याला दररोज पाण्यासाठी स्वतंत्रपणे पैसे देऊ शकतो आणि त्याचा वापर करू शकतो आणि धक्का बसलेला कासीम काझीकडे धावतो ज्यांनी युक्तिवाद धीराने ऐकला.

काझीच्या शहाणपणाची प्रचिती येते जेव्हा तो अहमदला सांगतो की त्याला त्याच्या वस्तू ठेवण्याचा अधिकार नाही, म्हणजे कासीमच्या मालमत्तेतील पाणी. तत्काळ पाणी काढून टाका किंवा कासीमला रोजचे भाडे द्या, त्यानंतर कासीम त्याला विहीर वापरण्यास देईल, अशा सूचनाही त्यांनी दिल्या. गोंधळलेला अहमद अवाक झाला. पण उदार माणूस असलेल्या कासीमने अहमदला ‘भाड्यासाठी’ कधी त्रास दिला नाही.

The story revolves around two main characters, Qasim and Ahmed. Qasim was a farmer and he had an eye on Ahmed's well and that would help him carry water to his field. Every time Qasim begged to go to Ahmed's well, Ahmed refused. Finally one day Ahmed suggested to Qasim that he could buy a well from him. Qasim liked the idea, which he thought was beneficial, so he bought a well out of all his savings.

The next day Qasim went to his own well (or so he thought) and drew an aqueduct to draw water. Ahmed asked him how he dared to touch the water in his presence and he further stated that he had only sold the well to him and the water in the well did not belong to him yet. He also made a suggestion that Qasim could pay and use the water separately for him every day, and the shocked Qasim ran to Qazi who listened to the argument patiently.

The Qazi's wisdom is realized when he tells Ahmed that he has no right to keep his belongings, that is, water in Qasim's property. Drain the water immediately or pay the daily rent to Qasim, after which Qasim will allow him to use the well, he added. Confused Ahmed was stunned. But Qasim, a generous man, never bothered to 'hire' Ahmed.
