The story revolves around a mother with two daughters, one named Holena and the other her stepdaughter Marukla who is kind, hardworking and beautiful. Mom does her work all day which she does happily.

The mother and her daughter are jealous of Marukala's beauty and want to get her out of her life. She is threatened with freezing cold to get fruits and flowers that do not grow in winter.

She is lucky enough to meet twelve men who are actually twelve months old. Every time she is in trouble they help her and finally put an end to the evil mother and daughter. The story ends when Maruk lives a happy life. The story also highlights that good always triumphs over evil.
