நந்தினியும் பாண்டியும் சிறுவயதில் இருந்தே நல்ல நண்பர்கள். அவர்கள் ஒரே தெருவில் வசித்து வந்தனர், எனவே அவர்கள் எப்போதும் ஒன்றாகவே இருந்தனர். தினமும் பாண்டி பள்ளிக்கு செல்லும் வழியில் தன் வீட்டில் நின்று விடுவான். இருவரும் பேசிக்கொண்டும் விளையாடியும் பள்ளிக்குச் செல்வார்கள். சில நேரங்களில், அவர்கள் பள்ளியிலிருந்து வீட்டிற்கு ஓடுவார்கள். அவர்கள் எப்போதும் ஒன்றாக பள்ளி நடவடிக்கைகளில் பங்கேற்பார்கள். அவர்கள் பாடங்களில் ஒருவருக்கொருவர் உதவினார்கள்.

ஒரு நாள் வழக்கம் போல் பாண்டி நந்தினியின் வீட்டிற்கு வந்தான். அவள் வருத்தமாகவும் சோகமாகவும் பார்த்த பாண்டி அவளிடம் “ஏன் சோகமாக இருக்கிறாய்?” என்று கேட்டான், அவள் பதில் சொல்லவில்லை. மாறாக அவள் தலையை ஆட்டினாள். “உன் பெற்றோர் திட்டினார்களா?” என்று கேட்டான் பாண்டி. அவள் அவனுக்கு பதில் சொல்லவில்லை. அவளது பையைப் பிடித்து, “முடிந்தால் என்னைப் பிடித்துக்கொள்” என்று உற்சாகமாகச் சொன்னான். ஆனால் அவள் பதிலளிக்கவில்லை. பாண்டி நிறுத்தி பையை திரும்ப கொடுத்தான். மௌனமாக பள்ளியை நோக்கி நடந்தனர்.

நந்தினி மெதுவாக வகுப்பறைக்குள் சென்றாள். அவள் கண்கள் தரையில் ஒட்டிக்கொண்டன. அவள் சோகமாகத் தெரிந்தாள், “யாராவது உன்னைத் திட்டினாரா?”, வகுப்பில் இருந்த அவளுடைய தோழி ஒருத்தி கேட்டாள்.’ நந்தினி தலையை ஆட்டினாள். அவள் தலை குனிந்து அமர்ந்தாள். ஆசிரியர் வகுப்பறைக்குள் நுழைந்து வருகைக்கான பெயர்களைக் கூறத் தொடங்கினார். டீச்சர் பெயர் சொல்லி அழைத்ததும் நந்தினி பதில் சொல்லவில்லை.

ஆசிரியர் எரிச்சலடைந்தார். இந்த முறை அவள் தன் பெயரை சத்தமாக அழைத்தாள், “நந்தினி!” பின்னர், அவள் கையை உயர்த்தினாள் ஆனால் பதில் சொல்லவில்லை. ஆசிரியர் நந்தினியின் அருகில் சென்றார். அவள் நெற்றியைத் தொட்டு, “நல்லா இருக்கியா?” என்று கேட்டாள். நந்தினி தலையை ஆட்டினாள். அவள் கன்னங்கள் சிவந்திருந்தன, அவளுக்கு காய்ச்சல் இருப்பது போல் இருந்தது. “உனக்கு காய்ச்சல் இருக்கிறதா? நான் உங்கள் பெற்றோரை அழைக்கட்டுமா?' என்று கேட்டார் ஆசிரியர். அவள் தலையை அசைத்தாள், ஆனால் அவள் இன்னும் யாரையும் பார்க்கவில்லை. அவள் தலை இன்னும் குனிந்திருந்தது.

'ஏன் நந்தினி மிகவும் சோகமாக இருக்கிறாள்?' என்று கூச்சலிட்டாள் அவளுடைய நண்பர்கள். அவளுடைய நண்பர்கள் நூறு கேள்விகளால் அவளைத் துன்புறுத்தினர்! நீங்கள் நினைப்பதைப் பற்றிய கேள்விகள், அவர்கள் அவளுடைய குடும்பம், அவளுடைய வீடு, அவளுடைய காலணிகள் மற்றும் அவளுடைய தெரு செல்லப்பிராணிகளைப் பற்றிக் கேட்டனர். அவள் கேட்கும் ஒவ்வொரு கேள்விக்கும் நந்தினி தலையை மட்டும் அசைத்து பதில் சொன்னாள்.

பாண்டிக்கு நந்தினியின் மௌனம் போதும். அவளை இவ்வளவு மந்தமாக அவன் பார்த்ததே இல்லை. அவளை சிரிக்க வைக்க அவருக்கு ஒரு யோசனை தேவைப்பட்டது. பல மணி நேரம் யோசித்து யோசித்தான். இறுதியாக, அவருக்கு ஒரு யோசனை தோன்றியது! பையில் இருந்து எதையோ எடுத்து அவளிடம் காட்ட ஓடினான். அவர் கீழே விழுந்தார், அது அவரது கைகளில் இருந்து நழுவியது. நேராக நந்தினியிடம் பறந்து கொண்டிருந்தது. தன்னை நோக்கி ஏதோ பறப்பதைக் கண்டு பயந்து அலறினாள். அவள் கண்களை மூடிக்கொண்டு அதைப் பிடிக்க முயன்றாள். அடி! அவள் அதைப் பிடித்தாள். அது ஒரு பெரிய பச்சை தவளை. தவளைக்கு பயந்து அனைவரும் ஓடினர்.

நந்தினியின் கண்கள் ஆச்சரியத்துடன் திறந்திருந்தன. பிறகு, அவள் வெடித்துச் சிரித்தாள்.அது ஒரு ரப்பர் தவளை! அவள் சிரித்தவுடனே, அவள் ஏன் நாள் முழுவதும் யாரிடமும் புன்னகைக்கவில்லை, பேசவில்லை என்று அவளுடைய தோழிகளுக்கும் ஆசிரியருக்கும் தெரியும். அவளுடைய முன்பற்கள் இரண்டு காணவில்லை!
