பீட்டர் ஹாலந்தில் வாழ்ந்த ஒரு சிறுவன். கப்பல்கள் ஹாலந்தின் கால்வாய்களில் இருந்து கடலுக்குள் செல்லும் வகையில் ஸ்லூயிஸ் எனப்படும் அணைகளை அவரது தந்தை கவனித்துக் கொண்டார். இலையுதிர்காலத்தின் ஒரு அழகான நாளில், எட்டு வயதான இந்த சிறுவன், பீட்டர், அவனது தாயால் டைக்கின் மறுபுறத்தில் வசிக்கும் தனது பார்வையற்ற நண்பருக்கு கேக் கொடுக்கச் சென்றார். சுமார் ஒரு மணி நேரம் கழித்து அவர் வீடு திரும்பும் போது, சீதோஷ்ண நிலை மாறிவிட்டது; மழை பெய்து வாய்க்காலில் தண்ணீர் பெருகி வந்தது.

திடீரென்று தண்ணீர் வடியும் சத்தம் கேட்டு அந்த சத்தம் எங்கிருந்து வந்தது என்று யோசித்தார். அப்போது அவர் கண்டத்தில் ஒரு சிறிய ஓட்டை! இப்போது ஹாலந்தில் உள்ள ஒவ்வொரு குழந்தைக்கும் அதன் அர்த்தம் தெரியும்! நீரின் அழுத்தம் காரணமாக அந்த ஓட்டை நீண்ட நேரம் ஒரே மாதிரியாக இருக்காது, அதாவது வெள்ளம்! என்ன செய்வது என்று அவருக்குத் தெரியும். அவன் டைக் மீது குதித்து, துளைக்குள் விரலை வைத்தான். இப்போது யாராவது உதவிக்கு வருவார்கள் என்று நம்பி சத்தமாக அழுதான். அவன் பார்வையற்ற நண்பனுடன் அவன் தங்கி ஓய்வெடுத்துக் கொண்டு படுக்கைக்குச் சென்றதாக அவன் தாய் தவறாக எண்ணினாள். ஹாலந்தில் வெள்ளப்பெருக்கு ஏற்படாமல் தடுக்க, இரவு முழுவதும் விழித்திருந்து, துளைக்குள் விரலை வைத்திருக்க வேண்டும் என்பதில் சிறுவன் உறுதியாக இருந்தான். கால்வாயில் தண்ணீர் பெருகிக் கொண்டிருந்தது, மதகில் உள்ள ஓட்டையிலிருந்து விரலைக் கழற்றினால், தண்ணீர் பீறிட்டு, குழியைப் பெரிதாக்கும். நகரம் வெளிப்படையாக வெள்ளத்தில் மூழ்கும்.

The boy was determined to stay awake all night and keep his finger in the hole to prevent flooding in Holland. The water in the canal was overflowing and if you remove your finger from the hole in the canal, the water will seep in and enlarge the pit. The city is obviously flooded.
