The legend of the marathon is the inspirational story of twenty-two year old Fedipides. Fighting broke out between the Persians and the Athenians but the former refused to accept defeat. They saw that the whole Athenian army was far away from their city, and that only old men, women, and children had returned home to Athens. The Persians planned to reach Athens by sea and capture it before returning to the city to celebrate Athens.

Fortunately, the Athenian generals, being good strategists, were able to predict this situation. The Persians were given the message of victory before they reached Athens. The responsibility was given to Fedipides, the fastest runner who could travel faster than Persian ships. A true patriot, he gladly accepted. The day before, when he had gone to the neighboring state of Sparta, he had already completed more than two hundred kilometers of running, which did not deter him from the task assigned to him.

He did his best; Facing all the difficulties and difficulties, he kept running tirelessly. He was weak with hunger and thirst, his heart was pounding but he continued his mission to reach the city. They informed the Athenians that they had won, and that their army would soon be there. But alas! He collapsed after performing his assigned duties. He had sacrificed his life for the service of Athens, thus setting an example of selflessness and patience, patriotism and devotion to the motherland.

His willingness to do anything for his kingdom and his historic run from the marathon to Athens is unforgettable. The marathon that we are witnessing in the Olympic Games started in Greece in memory of this great young Pheidippides.
