Madhumita Gupta’s story ‘Brought in the Book’ emphasizes that students should maintain books and notebooks properly. Mahesh dreams that he has been taken to court for misusing his books and notebooks.

The story begins with Judge Mathematics beating the hammer for peace in court. He stared at Mahesh and the crowd and called the first witness. Mahesh nervously chewed his nails. The first witness, an English lady, complained to him that Mahesh was dressed in pink and gray when he came home. But for now, she was unknowingly chewing on both ink, grease spots, merciless dog ears and visitors. She looked worn out, tears streaming down her cheeks. She told the judge that Mahesh had brought her home a few months ago, but never bothered to cover her properly with the nice brown paper his father had brought.

Despite being reprimanded and punished by the teacher for that, he did not mind correcting himself. He inadvertently lowered her down and stared at her, stuffing her in his crowded bag anyway, sometimes stuffing her near an oily lunch box. Anxious to hear all this, Mahesh realized his mistake of not listening to his mother telling him to take care of his books. He was an otherwise good guy and was even able to be in the top five ranks in the class. But he was too lazy.

Next Mr. Geography complained that he was in a worse position than Ms. English. He had no cover, the content page was hanging and the maps were mercilessly filled with colors. He was jealous of his brother who belonged to Shobita. She handled him neatly. Mr. complained that Mahesh did not clean the pencil box. Sometimes he chewed whenever he got stuck for the answer. The school bag complained about his broken straps and hooks. The master notebook complained that he was thrown on the wall for failing to solve a problem in math. So, in the end, they all decided to attack him and punish him.

While almost everyone was clinging to him, Ms. English judge asked Mahesh a second chance at mathematics because it was his first offense and he deserved a little consideration. Others saw the cause and slowly retreated. Suddenly he heard his mother yelling at him to get up. It's a dream. He got up and hid all his books. The following year, Mahesh Kumar won the prize for 'Books with the Best Vision'.
