लॉरेन्स अल्मा तडेमा यांनी लिहिलेली ‘अ लार्क’ ही एक कविता आहे जी आपण ज्या परिस्थितीत आहोत त्या परिस्थितीत आपण कसे आनंदी नाही यावर प्रकाश टाकतो आणि आपण आहोत त्यापलीकडे कोणीतरी किंवा काहीतरी बनण्याची इच्छा आहे. असे काही वेळा असतात जेव्हा आपण नसलेले काहीतरी बनण्याची तीव्र इच्छा असते. या म्हणीप्रमाणे गवत दुसऱ्या बाजूला नेहमीच हिरवे असते. कवीने या कवितेतून हे सुंदरपणे चित्रित केले आहे जिथे तो लार्क पक्षी आणि गोल्डफिश या दोघांनाही विचारतो की ते खरोखर आनंदी होते का आणि ते जे जीवन जगतात त्याबद्दल कंटाळले नाहीत. आकाशात उंच उडणाऱ्या लार्क पक्ष्याला उद्देशून कवी लार्कला विचारतो की तो खिन्न ढगांमध्ये रिकाम्या आकाशात पोहोचल्यावर थकला नाही का?

कवीला समुद्रातील सोनेरी मासा बनण्याची इच्छा कधी कधी आली आहे का, हे कवीला लार्ककडून जाणून घ्यायचे आहे. कवी समुद्रात खोलवर डुबकी मारणाऱ्या गोल्डफिशला विचारतो की जेव्हा थंडीच्या लाटा हळूवारपणे आणि शांतपणे त्यावर सरकतात तेव्हा खरोखर आनंद होतो का? ? आकाशात उंच भरारी घेणाऱ्या लार्क पक्ष्याप्रमाणे गाण्याची आणि जीवन जगण्याची इच्छा नाही का, याची कवी चौकशी करतो. सुंदर उदाहरणांसह एक साधी कविता म्हणजे उदाहरणे, कवीने जीवनाचे एक साधे सत्य मांडले आहे.
