கமலா தாஸ் எழுதிய இந்தக் கதை, கேரள கிராமத்தில் உள்ள தனது தாத்தா பாட்டி வீட்டில் ஒரு புயல் நாள் நடந்த சம்பவத்தை விவரிக்கிறது. அம்பழத்தேலில் ஒருவரின் பிறந்தநாள் விருந்துக்கு கமலா தாஸும் அவரது மூத்த சகோதரரும் அழைக்கப்பட்டனர். மாலதி குட்டி அவர்களை நாக சன்னதிக்கு அழைத்துச் சென்றனர். அங்கு மீனாட்சி ஏடத்தியை பார்த்தனர். அவள் அம்பழத்தேள் குடும்பத்தின் தூரத்து உறவினர். பாம்புகளுக்கு மஞ்சள், பால், வாழைப்பழம் ஆகியவற்றைப் போட்டுக் கொண்டிருந்தாள்.

ஏழையாக இருந்ததால் அவர்களின் பெருந்தன்மையை நம்பி இருந்தாள். நடுத்தர வயதுடைய மீனாட்சி, சில அற்ப வேலைகளைச் செய்து, வீட்டையும் வளாகத்தையும் சுற்றி விரவிக் கொண்டிருந்தாள். ஆனால், குடும்பத்தில் உள்ளவர்களின் தேவைகளை அறிந்தவர் மீனாட்சி மட்டும் என்பதால் அம்பழத்தேளின் குடும்பம் ஒரு நாள் கூட மீனாட்சி இல்லாமல் மகிழ்ச்சியாக இருந்திருக்க முடியாது.

மதிய உணவுக்குப் பிறகு, மாலதி குட்டியுடன் நாலாபட் வீட்டிற்குத் திரும்பினர். ஒரு மணி நேரத்தில், அவர்கள் ஒரு புயல் சத்தம் கேட்டது. இந்த சூறாவளி காற்றினால் தென்னை மரங்களை கிழித்து, காய்ந்த இலைகள் மேல்நோக்கி சுழன்று கிளைகள் அசைந்து ஊஞ்சலின் இருக்கை கீழே விழுந்தது. கமலா தாஸின் பாட்டி, (அம்மாம்மா) அவர்கள் அனைவரையும் மாடியின் நடு அறையில் உட்காரச் சொல்லி, அவர்களுக்கு விளையாட உலோகப் பகடைகளைக் கொடுத்தார்.

அவரது தந்தையின் தாய் (முத்தாசி) அனைத்து சிறிய ஜன்னல்களையும் மூட உத்தரவிட்டார். மழையின் சத்தம் மக்கள் கூட்டத்தின் கர்ஜனை போல இருந்தது. அம்பழத்தேலுக்குப் போய் குட்டி ஒப்போவைப் பார்க்க வேண்டும் என்று மாலதி குட்டி வற்புறுத்தினாள். புயல் நின்றவுடன் அனுப்புகிறேன் என்று அம்மாம்மா ஆறுதல் கூற முயன்றாள். கொல்லைப்புறம் வெள்ளத்தில் மூழ்கி சென்ட்ரல் ஹாலிலும் தண்ணீர் தேங்கியது. அவர்கள் அனைவரும் தங்கள் படுக்கைகளிலும் மெத்தைகளிலும் அமர்ந்தனர். அப்போதுதான் அம்மை தோலில் நனைந்தவளாக வந்தாள். அச்சத்தை மறக்க அக்ஷர கோஷங்களை உச்சரிக்கலாம் என்று செரியம்மா பரிந்துரைத்தார்.

அம்மனும் அம்மையும் மாடிக்கு ஏறியதும் வேலைக்காரப் பெண் தன் கைகளால் தலையில் அடித்து அழ ஆரம்பித்தாள். அவள் தன் குடும்ப உறுப்பினர்களைப் பற்றி கவலைப்பட்டாள். முத்தச்சியும் அம்மாம்மாவும் அவளுக்கு ஆறுதல் கூறிவிட்டு, மழை நின்றவுடன் மறுநாள் வீட்டுக்குப் போகலாம் என்று கூறினர். அவர்கள் அனைவரும், மரங்கள் தரையில் விழுவதையும், மேற்கு முற்றத்தில் ஒரு நாய் சிணுங்குவதையும் கேட்டனர். முற்றத்தில் முழங்கால் அளவு தண்ணீர் இருப்பதாக சங்கரன் நாயர் அவர்களிடம் கூறினார்.

தும்பி, அவர்களின் வீட்டு நாயும் நனைந்து குளிரில் நடுங்கிக் கொண்டிருந்தது. தும்பி படுத்திருக்க சங்கரன் ஒரு குனிப் பையை விரித்தான். அவர்கள் அனைவரும் இரவு முழுவதும் தெற்கு அறையில் கழித்தனர். அவர்கள் கண்விழித்தபோது மழை நின்றிருந்தது. அனைவரும் பாதுகாப்பாக இருக்கிறார்களா என்று பார்க்க வடக்கரையை சேர்ந்த இளைஞர் ஒருவர் வந்தார். அவர் விடியற்காலையில் ஆரம்பித்து தண்ணீரில் அலைந்ததாக அவர்களிடம் கூறினார். அவர் செல்லும் வழியில், இடிந்து விழுந்த குடிசைகள் மற்றும் மரங்கள், இறந்த கோழிகள், செத்த ஆடுகள் தண்ணீரில் மிதப்பதைக் கண்டார். கமலா தாஸ் அந்த இளைஞனிடம் யாராவது முறுக்கு அல்லது தேதிகளை அனுப்பினார்களா என்று விசாரித்தபோது, அதையெல்லாம் கேட்க இது நேரம் இல்லை என்று அவரது பாட்டி அவளைத் திருத்தினார். கமலா வெட்கத்துடன் தலை குனிந்தாள்.

Kamala Das and her elder brother were invited to someone's birthday party in Ambalathel. Malathi Kutty took them to Naga Sanctuary. There they saw Meenakshi Edathi. She is a distant relative of the Ambalathel family. She was putting turmeric, milk and bananas on the snakes.

She relied on their generosity because she was poor. Meenakshi, a middle-aged woman, was doing some menial work and scattering around the house and premises. But since Meenakshi is the only one who knows the needs of the family, the family of Ambalathel could not have been happy without Meenakshi even one day.

After lunch, Nalapat returned home with Malati Kutty. Within an hour, they heard the sound of a storm. The hurricane tore the coconut trees, the dry leaves twisted upwards and the branches swayed and the seat of the swing fell down. Kamala Das' grandmother (grandmother) told them all to sit in the middle room upstairs and gave them metal dice to play with.

His father's mother (Muthasi) ordered all the small windows to be closed. The sound of rain was like the roar of a crowd. Malati Kutty persuaded him to go to Ambalathel and see Kutty Oppo. My grandmother tried to comfort me by saying that I would send her as soon as the storm stopped. The backyard was flooded and water was stagnant in Central Hall. They all sat on their beds and mattresses. That's when Amma came soaking wet in the skin. Seriyamma suggested that one should utter syllables to forget fear.
